I have always felt drawn to photographing the reality of things that some people perhaps either don’t think about or choose to ignore. It’s often easier to pretend not to notice the harsh realities of the world we live in, poverty for example, because there is no immediate solution and frankly it’s depressing. The thing that I noticed the most on arrival in South Africa is the enormous divide between the people who have material wealth and the people who don’t. In Johannesburg it’s very common to see expensive cars on the roads such as Maserati’s and BMW’s juxtapositioned with people missing limbs begging at traffic lights. I’ve set about photographing these people who are often ignored and forgotten with the aim of raising awareness of their situations and also to raise funds for skills training and further education which is often what’s needed to change the lives of people living in poverty for the better.
