This is a picture of our big dog Jane (left) and the newest addition to our family, Jeremy. We got this little chap from Sandton SPCA last week and he’s lovely. Due to the fact that we had a puppy with Parvo in the house (please click here to read the explanatory blog) another puppy was a no no, so an older dog was our only sensible option for a four legged addition. I saw Jeremy when I went to volunteer at the SPCA at the beginning of February and decided to adopt him despite the fact that he is quite an old man at 7 years of age. After paying a deposit, one of the SPCA officers came to check our house was suitable and then we were given the OK to collect the little guy on Valentine’s Day.
Whilst puppies are adorable and cute there is something very satisying about giving a home to an older dog. Apart from the odd wee in the house and the fact that he has to sleep next to my side of the bed (I suspect he’d rather be IN our bed), he’s such a pleasure to have around. He was picked up as a stray so we have no idea about his background, but he’s incredibly good natured and judging by how much he likes to be with us all, he’s clearly happy to be a part of our family. I’m a strong advocate of adopting dogs from shelters rather than buying from breeders and as our experience with Jeremy has been so rewarding, I’d highly recommend checking out the pooch selection at your local SPCA or animal shelter if you’re considering adding a four legged friend to your household.
Jeremy came from Sandton SPCA: www.sandtonspca.org.za and they also have a national website where you can find a branch that’s close to you: http://www.nspca.co.za
