This little girl was living with her mother in a row of shacks made from cardboard that had been built in an underpass. As a mother myself, I find it very upsetting to see a child being brought up in such difficult circumstances, but this is a very familiar scene in Johannesburg. I looked up the statistics for homelessness in Johannesburg and found a 1998 survey which found that there were 6,152 people living on the streets of Johannesburg, 15% (just under 923) of which were children. The rich/poor chasm in South Africa is something I’ll never get used to, maybe as this country develops life will become easier for the poorest people. The positive aspects for this little one is that she is with her mother (and father I think) so whilst she’s living on the street, she’s with her family which is more than some street children have.
