Pet portrait photography by Johannesburg based professional photographer Emma O’Brien.
Candice (mom to all these creatures) commissioned me to photograph her beloved pets as part of her 30th birthday gift. We photographed Idess the horse at her riding stables and then I went to Candice’s house with my mobile studio set up to shoot the dogs and a very elusive kitty.
Idess’s shoot had to be rescheduled twice due to rainy weather, so I was thrilled when, third time lucky, we managed to get some beautiful sunshine and blue sky as a backdrop for her photographs. Horses can be quite challenging to photograph and Idess was no different. She was more interested in running around me (and occasionally at me), however, I still captured some great images of her.
The dogs were a bit easier to work with than Idess, using bribery in the form of biltong and promises of cuddles on the couch I got Luna, Woody and Zulik to pose for some gorgeous portraits. Their feline sister was not quite as cooperative and event the lure of catnip didn’t help to get her positioned in front of the white backdrop.
The individual portraits of them were photographed using my portable studio set up, they weren’t as cooperative in front of the white backdrop altogether, so we took their team portrait on the couch. Candice’s lounge was very light, so I just used natural light for these images.
I shoot pet portraits with the end result in mind which is usually framed prints for the wall and I’m super excited to see how these images look when they’re displayed in Candice’s home. I have a fabulous range of presentation options available for images including coffee table books, canvasses and framed prints.
