Doggy Portrait Photography – The “Township” Project

Doggy Portrait Photography – The “Township” Project

In South Africa a “Township” dog refers to a pooch of mixed breed decent, that originates from an informal settlement or (aka township) where dogs are left to their own devises and pro-create prolifically!   I’d not really paid much attention to the “Township” breed of dog until I started to volunteer at the SPCA and saw the huge variety of shapes, sizes and colours that this particular ‘breed’ of dog comes in.  I was also rather amused whilst walking my four legged friends at the park, to get the response “Township” when I asked some fellow dog owners which particular breed of dog theirs was.

As these dogs come in such a range of different styles (you really are limited by your imagination with this) I figured starting a project to document the variation would not only be great fun, but also a good way to raise awareness for these amazing creatures who are often overlooked for not being special enough.

This particular little one is Raisin who was rehomed from Puppy Haven by the Mason family and has certainly landed with her “Bum in the butter” as the saying here goes.  Raisin is a wire haired dachshund mix (maybe with jack russell, maybe not!!) and is incredibly loving despite not having had the best start in life.  You can see another photo of Raisin with her doggy sister Thuli and owner Serena by clicking here.

More “Township” photos coming soon.

I adopted a CLAW dog you photographed – when I saw your photo of her on the CLAW Facebook page it was love at first sight! I love telling people we met online… Thanks for taking the pic that enabled her adoption. She is amazing and was a member of the family from the very first moment. Your work is beautiful – I’ll defintiely be contacting you for a family (including our dogs) shoot… x (https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=346336385384843&set=a.346336308718184.92086.153244491360701&type=1&theater)
