I was commissioned to photograph a puppy portrait session of Zoey and her Mom a couple of weeks ago. We chose to shoot in late afternoon light at Delta Park where thankfully there is still one green spot to work in (summer, please hurry up and get here).
Zoey is a Cocker Spaniel puppy and the light of her Mom’s life. She’s 6 months old and her Mom wanted to get some beautiful portraits of her while she’s still a baby.
As a general rule, I shoot outdoor portraits that are backlit (the sun is behind my subjects). Having the sun directly behind allows for the most flattering light on human faces and gives spectacular contrast and definition in the background. Lighting is one of the key aspects to creating a beautiful photograph.
Zoey’s Mom and I chatted throughout the shoot about dogs (of course) and also why she’d chosen to commission a set of portraits with her puppy. She told me that she thought she might have been a bit crazy to have a shoot of just her and Zoey, but that Zoey is such an important part of her life it seemed crazy not to do it. People without animals won’t understand a shoot like this, people with animals won’t question it.
The last 9 years of my life in South Africa have been filled with ups and downs. I moved to Joburg in 2009 with a boyfriend and that relationship ended three years later, my daughter moved back to the UK in 2013 and throughout the upheaval and heartache my dogs have been a constant source of love and companionship for me. Dogs play such an integral emotional support role in our lives and I think we take for granted just how amazing they are.
As far as I’m concerned it’s totally normal to book portrait sessions for dogs. I love meeting fellow dog parents and their dog children for portrait shoots and being able to capture precious photographs like these ones.
Here’s what Zoey’s Mom had to day about her shoot and images, “Emma, thank you so much for an amazing photo shoot experience. I loved it and so did Zoey. I absolutely LOVE the edited photos, they are beautiful.”
