I had an action packed Border Collie portrait shoot last week with Roxy (pictured above), Jamie her ball loving sister and tiny tot Bella. Their Mom won a portrait shoot as part of an E-Pet Store competition and I went through to their home to shoot the pics.
Jamie had no interest in a photo shoot, she thought I’d come through just to play ball (typical Border Collie), which is what we did. She’s not looking at me in this shot, she’s looking at the ball I was holding like a contortionist above the camera lens.
This little girl is Bella, a King Charles Cavalier Spaniel mix, who also didn’t really want to sit still for pictures, but could be bribed with biscuits.
Mom wanted a pic with all three hounds, but Jamie was off to one side playing ball, so she had to settle for Bella and Roxy.
I am really in my happy place when I photograph dogs, not just because dogs are cool, but because I get to meet and chat with fellow dog lovers and compare notes about dog parenting and how many shoes have been lost to sneaky teeth.
Roxy wanted to snack on biscuits and could be kept momentarily still with a quick wave of a treat, I had to work quickly though because Jamie was busy photobombing every time she ran past after her ball.
Portraits of animals are such a treat to have. I think it can sometimes seem like an indulgence, especially if you chat to non-dog people who find pet photography hilarious, but our creatures share our lives for short periods of time in the grand scheme of things, so why not celebrate and make sure you have great memories of them.
