You’ll notice a theme with my work, that a lot of it includes dogs. Dog and family photography is something I’m commissioned to shoot regularly and I love it!
Children and dogs are the hardest subjects to photograph (or so everyone says) but I revel in the chaos of a shoot that includes both.
This is the second time I’ve photographed this family and their dogs Diesel and Grace. Their last shoot was in 2015 before the newest addition was on the cards, you can check out the photos from their previous family portrait session here – Livvy’s Family Shoot
The biggest challenge with toddlers and dogs is getting them to sit in one position long enough to get a good shot and then the next challenge is to get them looking at the camera. Biltong is a big help, as is my collection of dog noises that either get dogs to sit still and tilt their heads, or run towards me, in which case we’re back to square one. Patience is a virtue that I possess lots of.
The thing that strikes me the most during dog and family photography sessions is the bond people have with their dogs. Diesel and Grace are an integral part of this family and add so much happiness to everyone’s lives.
Once the dogs had had their photos taken, we could focus on the newest member of the family.
Livvy is a delightful little girl, so it was very easy to work with her and get her to sit with her baby brother.
Timing is also key when I work with small children. It’s best to catch them after breakfast and well before they need to nap. They also can’t be expected to cooperate for too long, so I work as efficiently as I can to maximise the time before they get fed up. Having said that, if you take a look at my previous blog post, you’ll see that little Miss G told her Mom that I took too many photos and just one pic would have been her preference (no pressure) – Family Lifestyle Shoot.
Baby Josh slept through most of the shoot and then at the very end we were able to get some pics of him with his eyes open, just before he was due for a feed.
