I photographed this beautiful couple in their Johannesburg home. Like me, they are both ex-pats, so we had lots to talk about (how much we love SA, the fact that it’s much sunnier than Europe and the merits of a spacious skyline to name a few topics of conversation). Their home has a fabulous roof garden which is where we took this shot and the one at the end of the blog with baby Lena, although the shots look quite different due to the change of time for the shoots (we did the maternity shoot in the morning and the newborn shoot in the afternoon) and the brewing storm in the second photo!
We took photos in their home and then we took a stroll to 27 Boxes in Melville for some location shots. Given that this pair are probably not going to be in SA permanently, we took some time to get some ‘Joburg’ specific shots. I like to document locations in portrait shoots, the city of Joburg has changed so much in the six years I’ve been in SA, that having a permanent record of what it was like at a particular time is really special.
Baby Lena arrived two weeks after we took maternity photos, so I went back to the family home for her newborn shoot. We took most of the photos in the garden, thankfully it was warm enough for Lena to be happy with nothing on and she slept through most of it which made for a stress free photo shoot.
I love the continuity of having taken a roof garden shot during the maternity shoot and then setting up a similar photo with Baby Lena. Mom however did need a bit more persuasion to climb onto a high wall once Lena was involved (we were all very careful, I promise). I think having photos taken during a time of huge transition, like the change from being a couple to being parents, is really amazing. Time passes us all by so quickly and having memories like these means you have a record of a precious time in your life that you can keep forever.
