“Laughter is the sound of the soul dancing. My soul probably looks like Fred Astaire.”
– Jarod Kintz
The Laughter Series is a personal project; a collection of portraits that are not necessarily flattering in the conventional sense i.e. wrinkle free and perfectly photoshopped, but portraits that capture a moment of raw emotion. We are constantly bombarded online and in the press with images of ‘beautiful’ people that are unrealistic and frankly boring to look at. To me, a person is at their happiest and most beautiful when they let go of inhibition for a moment and give in to laughter.
When I reflect on the happiest moments of my life, they are when I have been falling about laughing with friends or family over something silly such as an awkward joke, recollection of an amusing story or just something funny that came about during a conversation. This is what I want to capture with this series, the essence of happiness, which is always fleeting, but immortalised with a well timed click of the camera shutter.
I do my best to focus on the good stuff in the world and as much as this project will be huge fun for me to shoot, I hope it will also inspire moments of happiness for people viewing the images. It’s very difficult to look at people laughing and not start to smile. Happiness is very contagious and we all need a little more of it in our lives.
“Laughter is wine for the soul – laughter soft, or loud and deep, tinged through with seriousness – the hilarious declaration made by man that life is worth living.”
― Sean O’Casey
