As a family photographer, I get to meet a vast collection of wonderful people and I absolutely love creating memories for families that they can decorate their walls with and enjoy every day. This family had just welcomed a new baby boy and commissioned me to shoot portraits of him, his sister and the whole family, including the dogs and cat.
Their little guy was born with a cleft palate (which is being operated on soon) and thankfully this hadn’t affected his feeding so he was very happy and content throughout the shoot.
Newborn babies always look so concerned about life with their wrinkly frowns. Tiny tot was very curious about what was happening and stayed awake for most of the shoot.
Whilst he had a quick feed in between shots, I spent some time capturing the rest of the family. Proud big sister had lots of poses for me along with the four legged creatures who sat for a couple of pictures. The cat, in true cat style, wasn’t really interested in cooperating.
The whole family photo was a bit of a challenge, but when it comes to photographing animals and children there’s no such thing as the perfect shot. Photos with some emotion and energy and a dose of reality are far more appealing in my opinion. This is a moment in time that will never be repeated and it sums up the reality of the shoot brilliantly.
This images were shot on location in the family’s home in Johannesburg which made for a relaxed and calm (ish) setting for the shoot. I prefer to work in client’s homes for newborn shoots, everything is on hand and it’s easy to let older siblings have a break between shots in an environment that’s familiar to them.
