My daughter has been staying with me for the last couple of weeks, she lives in the UK with her dad, so visits are our sacred time to catch up and reconnect. Each time I see her, I shoot portraits of her. This time, we had a few days at the coast, so we did a beach photo shoot in Kenton-on-Sea.
Luckily for us, we had one day where the wind wasn’t blowing and the sun was shining so we could make the most of a beautiful sunset, and the fact that my child doesn’t feel the cold, to get some gorgeous shots of her.
The portraits I take of her aren’t just for my benefit. Like many teenage girls, Rosie sometimes has self esteem wobbles, so it’s lovely for me to be able to shoot photographs for her that make her look pretty and then report all the lovely comments about them back to her.
Shooting portraits on a beach at sunset is very cool, I love being by the sea, even if I was wearing my ski jacket to fend off the cold.
Rosie went back to the UK on Monday, so I’m looking forward to our next visit in October. Much like a long distance relationship, our lives are punctuated with a couple of weeks together here and there.
I shot some very different looking portraits of Rosie in London earlier this year which you can view here.
If beach shoots are something you’re keen on, please get in touch with me. I’m often in Port Elizabeth and Cape Town and I’d love the opportunity to shoot some portraits when I’m visiting.
