Family photography taken on location at home in Johannesburg using natural light.
Shooting a family photography session at home is usually a great bet for getting some fun and unique images. Kids are often more relaxed in their own environment, and relaxed kids mean happy parents! I was commissioned to shoot baby Chloe’s newborn portraits as well as images of her older brothers, the whole family and Chase the puppy (the other new addition).
Getting the whole team together was a bit of a challenge. Baby Chloe was due for a feed, Chase wasn’t keen to sit still and the boys were wanting to play in the garden, so after this shot we went back inside to concentrate on getting some candid shots of the boys and of course star of the show Chloe.
There’s usually only a small window of opportunity when photographing young children. They aren’t interested in sitting still for long and often they prefer to be outside playing or exploring which is the perfect opportunity to capture some natural portraits of them.
Newborn babies on the other hand are quite easy to work with once they’ve been fed as as long as they are kept warm throughout the shoot.
I recommend taking newborn photos within the first 10 to 14 days of baby’s arrival whilst they are still very small and sleep a lot. If there are other siblings to consider, then a family shoot should be planned around their naps times, allowing plenty of time before they are due to sleep.
