I love mutts, which is why I spent a huge amount of time and effort recently, crowdfunding for Mutts the book which will hit shelves in October. In celebration of mutts, especially the brown ones who often find themselves in shelters, I put together 50 Shades of Brown, a collaboration with CLAW (Community Led Animal Welfare), Friendship Collar South Africa and Dustcloud Productions.
The idea came about after taking some photos of the dogs at CLAW a few months ago and joking with Jennifer, their vet nurse, that all the dogs they have are brown and look the same. As you’ll see from the video, they look nothing alike and are each entirely unique, but they are some sort of shade of brown. It’s my passion in life to promote adoption of shelter dogs and especially the ones that are overlooked because they don’t bear any resemblance to a pedigree dog, so I do my best to highlight their wonders and secret charms (of which they have many).
Despite our best efforts we only managed to photograph 28 dogs, not 50 due to constant interference from Calvin, Mr Brown, Princess, Small and Lady who spent the best part of the shoot either photo bombing or stealing treats.
Since the video was made, several of the dogs have been adopted including Calvin and Toffee who were long term residents at CLAW.
I’d love to hear about your brown mutts, so please post your dog stories in the comments below.
I hope you enjoy watching the video as much as we enjoyed making it.
