Portraits of a busy toddler

Toddlers are one of the most challenging subjects to work with as a professional photographer. They don’t follow instructions, move like lightening and can very quickly transmute from delirious happiness to cataclysmic meltdown.

Luckily for both her parents and me, this little lady stayed on the delightful end of the scale and we had a calm and fun shoot.

Her mom had warned me that she normally needed a while to warm up to new people (not unusual for babies between 12 and 18 months) so I was well prepped for a slow start to the shoot. However, whilst it took a bit of time for the smiles to emerge, she seemed to think I was ok from the get go.

Patience is the name of the game with all children, however it’s especially important with toddlers. They’re still working the world out and can become upset quickly if things don’t go the way they expect.

We took some pictures in the garden, then went for a stroll in the nearby park and then headed back home and let the star of the show do her own thing. Natural moments often make for the best photographs, so here’s some portraits I shot whilst tiny tot was loading stones into a bucket.

This is not my first shoot for this set of clients, I was commissioned in 2017 to photograph their Corgi, Charlie. So of course he had to be included in a few shots. Getting a dog and a toddler to sync together in one picture was tricky, then this happened (he’s being offered a price of grass).

I work on location as well as in studio, so if you’d like family portraits taken in your own home or garden, get in touch with me here to find out more.
