Last year, I had the privilege of photographing something truly extraordinary: Joanne Lefson and her world-famous painting pig, Pigcasso, for Pet Prints Magazine. The shoot took place just a week before Pigcasso sadly passed away, making the session both deeply moving and unforgettable.

Joanne Lefson and Pigcasso’s Remarkable Bond
Joanne Lefson is an animal activist and the visionary behind Farm Sanctuary SA in Franschhoek. Her life’s work has been to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome farm animals, giving them a safe space to live with dignity. Among her many rescues was Pigcasso, a once-destined-for-slaughter pig with a hidden talent that would change both of their lives.

Pigcasso became internationally famous for her bold, abstract paintings, created by holding a brush in her mouth and working on canvas. Together, Joanne and Pigcasso raised awareness about animal welfare and sustainability, proving that creativity and compassion can transcend species. Their partnership touched millions worldwide and left behind a legacy of art, activism, and heart.

The Setting: Franschhoek’s Farm Sanctuary SA
The shoot took place at Farm Sanctuary SA, nestled in the breathtaking Franschhoek Valley. This inspiring rescue centre is more than just a sanctuary; it’s a haven where animals are free to live out their lives safely. Against the backdrop of rolling vineyards and mountains, the sanctuary highlights the contrast between South Africa’s agricultural traditions and a more compassionate, sustainable vision for the future.

Pet Prints Magazine
It was an honour to create these images for Pet Prints Magazine, South Africa’s free pet lifestyle publication. Dedicated to supporting animal welfare organisations, Pet Prints combines uplifting stories, expert pet care advice, and features that celebrate the incredible relationships humans share with animals. Their mission is to educate, inspire, and ultimately raise funds for rescue organisations in need.

Photographing Animals of All Kinds
As a professional dog and animal photographer, I’ve spent years capturing the unique personalities and relationships that make our lives richer. From studio dog portraits to on-location shoots with rescue animals, I aim to create photographs that tell heartfelt stories. Working with Joanne and Pigcasso was an unforgettable reminder of why I do what I do: to honour the bonds we share with animals, preserve their legacies, and inspire compassion through imagery.

A Poignant Farewell
Photographing Pigcasso in her final days was a privilege I will never forget. The images are not just portraits; they are a tribute to a pig who changed perceptions worldwide, and to Joanne Lefson, who dedicated her life to giving Pigcasso—and countless other animals—a voice.
Pigcasso’s art may hang in galleries, but her legacy will live on in the hearts of all who believe in a kinder, more creative world.
