An ‘at home’ family portrait session in Sandton

Lockdown life has been an adjustment for us all and I feel that the change in pace calls for a more laid back approach to photography sessions. The majority of my shoots are now taking place at client’s homes and I’ve started to shoot in more of a documentary style, capturing moments as they happen rather than orchestrating specific poses.

Letting moments unfold rather than attempting to get pre-planned shots is the best approach (in my opinion) when working with small humans. Anyone whose met a three year old before will know that they can go from super happy to crazy mad in a heartbeat and I generally find that the less they’re pressured to perform, the quicker the recovery time.

I’ve been photographing these gorgeous humans for the past five years, and as well as capturing updated family portraits, this shoot was also to celebrate the impending arrival of baby number three.

In between children diving onto the bed and then exiting the room at speed, I captured maternity portraits. Mom is an art director, so we had some planned images in mind which were set up and then we worked with what unfolded as the small people reappeared.

Once the kids had run out of steam and headed off for lunch, we finished the shoot off with an outfit change and a few more pregnancy portraits, all shot with natural light.

If you like these images, you can commission your own ‘at home’ shoot by contacting me here. I’m running a special during lockdown which includes a two hour shoot and a magazine style album with 25 images.
