Photographing dogs and cat together – I predict a riot

Meet Castro, Sandton SPCA rescue pup and all round super chap.

Enter Heidi, rescue cat and a tiny bit of a diva.

This pet portrait shoot will go down in history as one of the most entertaining and hilarious shoots I have done in my long career. Castro was a gem and cooperated beautifully until Heidi the cat was added in.

Monochrome madam as she will henceforth be known slipped up the stairs and under the bed upon my arrival. She had to be coaxed out of her hidey-hole with fancy treats. First she was lured to the edge of the underside of the bed and placated with treats which she simply flicked back under the bed with a swiftly poked out paw. Once the treats were placed too far out of range (I cannot acutally put into words how funny it was watching her stuck out paw patting at the carpet to try and reach the treats) temptation got the better of her and she joined us. I think Castro’s face perfectly sums up who is in charge here.

Heidi was found as a small kitten all alone in a drain, so all jokes aside, I don’t think she’s the biggest fan of being bombarded with attention. She was happy to have some fuss and sit long enough for me to shoot some portraits for her Dad though.

Castro quietly wandered off whilst Heidi had her portraits taken and took a few moments to chill out on the couch.

When he was re-summoned to join Heidi on the bed, he kept a safe distance.

He looked rather relieved when she vacated the room and it was time for me to go home. Neither Castro or Heidi will really appreciate the purpose of my visit, their Dad however very much did. He chose 9 framed portraits from the shoot which will de displayed a little like this.

Have you got dogs and cats that get along? I’d be intrigued to know 🙂 And, if you like the ideas of portraits of them on the wall, please contact me and I’d be happy to discuss creating some fabulous wall art for you too.
