Purple Kennel Project ambassador Bruno photographed for Pet Prints Magazine

Philanthropists come in all sorts of guises. On this occasion, I met a furry one called Bruno. This handsome fella is the brand ambassador for the Purple Kennel Project, a phenomenal out reach campaign that distributes kennels to township animals in the Western Cape.

I feel a particular affinity to people and organisations that help South Africa’s less fortunate animals. Often dogs and cats who live with their owners in townships are well loved members of the family, however financial circumstances mean that dogs don’t have proper beds to sleep in and have to sleep outside whatever the weather.

Bruno’s mom Samantha decided to tackle this problem and so The Purple Kennel Project was born. By negotiating with a supplier to manufacture plastic kennels affordably, she’s been able to distribute 100 kennels a month since 2018 to dog parents in local townships so that their dogs have a warm place to sleep at night. It’s hard to put into words what this means for a family who has had no choice but to leave their dog sleeping on the ground in the cold.

Shooting the images for this article was a ton of fun (I love working with the Pet Prints team), the light was beautiful on the beach, Bruno was an amazing model and Samantha was equally as delightful. What you can’t see in the pics is the howling wind that was gusting, the reflector had to be canned before it blew away and I almost got tipped over a few times.

Bruno didn’t care 🙂 The bonus was also that Table Mountain was showing off its splendour for us too.

You’ll have to get your paws on a copy of the latest issue of Pet Prints Magazine to read Samantha and Bruno’s story. Visit their website – www.petprints.co.za to find your local pick up point.
You can find out more about the Purple Kennel Project on their website too – www.purplekennelproject.co.za – it costs just R465 to pay for a kennel.
