Jane celebrated her 12th birthday with a doggy cake smash

My beloved Jane turned 12 on the 1st of September. She’s a big dog and she’s had a few health issues recently, so I was somewhat relieved that she’s reached this milestone and I thought it would be nice to celebrate. I spend so much time photographing other people’s dogs that I often don’t get shots of mine, so I took an afternoon off to create some magic with a dog cake smash photoshoot for Jane.

As the weather is now warming up, I opted for an outdoor shoot rather than shooting in studio. The cake smash set up I used was a simple white sheet positioned carefully so the sun would shine through a tree behind it to create some dappled light which I then added onto with some props.

Jane has been in front of my camera since she was a puppy, so she’s incredibly good when it comes to knowing where to sit and dare I suggest it, knowing how to pose.

She does, however, have a terrible weakness for cake, so keeping her from devouring the whole thing straight away was a challenge.

Once she started, there was no stopping her…

In case of spectacular vomiting at a late hour, the remains of the cake were confiscated before she could eat it all. Also, there were a few desperate looking onlookers watching from inside the house who wanted to have cake too…

Huge thanks to Lauren-Jade from Hound and Home who made Jane’s cake and delivered it.
In case you’re wondering, I also photograph other dogs’ birthdays as well as kid’s cake smash photoshoots. Get in touch with me here for more info.
