Family portraits at home in Johannesburg with twin baby girls

Flexibility was the name of the game when setting up this shoot. Twins are notorious for arriving ahead of schedule, which these two, of course, did. After a month in NICU, we were able to get together for their newborn photoshoot.

I always photograph newborns at home, it’s far easier, everything is on hand and it’s a more relaxed and enjoyable experience for everyone.

Thanks to having to have a picc line in NICU, baby Malou’s head had been shaved on both sides, so Mom simply rolled with it and dressed her in the most badass t-shirt I’ve ever seen a small human wear.

It’s all in the details.

I take a very relaxed approach to newborn photography. I don’t use props, I keep the lighting and poses very natural and I go with the flow. Luckily, after their stay in NICU these tiny tots were in a feeding routine which meant we could plan the shoot time around that and reduce the risk of tears.

There was a slight fantasy of including the family dogs with the newborn shoot, but apparently the girls were a great source of excitement for one of the hounds so for safety’s sake (and to maintain calm) we’ll include the dogs next time around.

If you’ve got a baby on the way and you’d like to chat about a newborn photoshoot, please get in touch. I recommend booking your newborn shoot within the first 14 days of your baby’s birth for optimum tiny baby images (small humans grow FAST).
