Pregnancy & new baby portraits shot on location in Johannesburg with dogs.
Dogs are often the first household additions that change a couple into a family and as such, I’m often commissioned by clients who specifically want to include their dog children in pregnancy and new baby photography sessions. As you may have guessed, I don’t need to be asked twice.
Boulder and Tinkerbell were happy to be front and centre in their parents’ maternity shoot. We shot some portraits at the house to include them and then we headed outdoors for some calmer shots minus the fur kids. Don’t tell them, they thought I’d gone home.
Funny story. The shot above with one lonely yellow balloon should have had several more balloons with it. The knot I attempted to attach the balloon collection to my camera bag with came loose and I just caught this one as the others made a break for it. I’ll stick to my day job and stay away from boats. As an aside, I’m fully aware of the environmental bad manners that are releasing balloons into the sky, I felt very guilty.
Baby Kyla arrived 7 weeks after the newborn shoot and I headed back to capture portraits of her.
And Boulder.
Including dogs in a photo shoot with a new baby can be a bit tricky. I always proceed with caution so that the dogs don’t get stressed out and the baby doesn’t get trodden on. We just about managed to get everyone together here with the help of some snack items.
Dogs are often naturally reserved around newborn babies, they seem to know that they’re very precious and not to get too close. Boulder and Tinkerbell were far more interested in their grand parents downstairs than stealing Kyla’s thunder so once we’d taken some family portraits, they were dismissed.
Tiny humans can be a bit of a challenge to work with. This little lady was quite niggly during her shoot, so we had to work in between top up feeds to avoid a large collection of crying face photos.
When that happens I resort to photographing feet 😉
