Family portraits with a 9 month old baby

The rate at which children grow and change is pretty dramatic. If you’re a parent, you’ll know all about this. One minute you’ve got a tiny baby, the next minute (well this is how it feels) you’ve got a walking talking person that’s great company to hang out with.

I’ve been photographing this family since their adorable boy was a bump ( I went to photograph the dogs) and we’ve been getting together every time I’m in Cape Town to update their pics. For the last instalment, click here.

One of the perks of being a family portrait photographer is capturing the progression as babies grow up. My daughter was born just before I embarked on my photography career, so she’s been photographed a lot over the course of her life and the images are very precious to me.

I frequently talk about the process of photographing small children, it’s quite a delicate one. Timing is key to getting great portraits – babies need to be fresh from a nap so they are happy – early in the day is usually best. Little people get tired quickly so it’s not possible to spend hours photographing them, I do my best to use the time available efficiently so we’re not forcing an irritated and fed up baby to perform when they’ve had enough.

You’ll have noticed that this guy spent a vast proportion of his shoot flying through the air – it made him smile, so we kept doing it.

The dogs of the house had to be in on the action too, so we ended the shoot with a complete family portrait and of course kept them happy with their very own picture so they didn’t feel left out.
